A Candidate for Change

An election for the governing board of Bolton, a small Connecticut town of about 5,000 residents, located 10 miles (16 kilometers) east of Hartford, has been decided by a coin toss.

The Journal-Inquirer reports that Republican Michael Eremita on Tuesday kept his seat on Bolton's -member Board of Selectmen with a coin-toss win over Democratic challenger Kim Miller. Both received 718 votes in last week's election.

Under the town charter, tied elections can be decided by a special election or a coin toss. Eremita and Miller agreed on the latter because a special election could have cost up to $3,000.

Eremita, Miller, and Town Clerk Elizabeth Waters all flipped coins. Eremita won because he and Waters both tossed tails. Miller came up heads. Eremita's victory gave the board a 3-2 Republican advantage.

As soon as the first issue arises, they will come out saying they can't make heads nor tails out of any of this.

Given how ineffective our elected officials are at getting anything of substance accomplished and the absorbant cost of our electoral process, maybe that's how we should decide all of the elected offices. Could it be any worse than what we have been doing?

It's certainly cost effective if we could couple it with a vote of no confidence in there after a period of time.

I like the idea of all elections being won or lost on a coin toss. Would save a lot of time and money, and spare the electors listening to the rants of the nominees.

Bret, sounds like you are feeling better. Don't overdo it before you're fully healed. A chinook just rolled in here, raising the temp from -12c to +7c in a matter of minutes. SW wind at 23 kph. A lot of snow will melt overnight.

I am feeling a little better but far from 100% yet. This shitjust keeps dragging on. We were wonderfully warm yesterday and I about froze my ass today when I had to go outside.
