Loosing a Friend  ( Spade jumping up playing with JD about 10 years ago) This is one of the earliest photos of Spade our old Lab who wandered onto the place emaciated, almost to the point of death, Ten years ago on September 1st. I stayed up the night feeding him liver and rice to get some nourishment into his system gradually. Tomorrow at noon the Veterinary is to stop in and put him to sleep. Spade is loaded with cancer and can no longer manage the steps. I've dropped most of my usual Friday commitments to be here with him ad say good bye. He been a loyal, loving, friend and companion to us both in sickness and in health. His current levels of pain are such we can no longer justify not easing him of the burdens. I feel absolutely sick at heart. Our friends will be arriving for the holiday weekend with us and this tribute to our faithful friend is probably my last blog for a few days.  (Spades first trip to the Vet in my silver Mustang) |

I have a pic of him recently with me in bed comforting me when I was sick that I want to post in here when I find it.

It's always difficult to see a pet suffering, but you are doing the right thing to stop his pain. Spade will be missed by all members of your extended family.

Been off line for a week and I sign on to see this. I'm so sorry. Dogs are family, heck better than some family. I've been there, and feel for you. You were so good to him and he repaid you with love. As hard as it is, you don't want to see him suffer. So sad.

I remember when Spade first came into your lives, and how you tended to him 'round the clock until he regained some of his health. And I remember how you related his escapades with so much joy and happiness. I'm sure that Spade will live on in your memories --- and in your hearts/ You have my sincere condolences for your great loss.

I was so sorry to read this! I've lost two amazing canines in my life and one impressive cat...impressive, because I don't really consider myself a pussy kind of guy. I'm sure you have some incredible memories to help you cope with your loss. With time, the loss and pain will subside, become replaced love and memories and making room for new loves to come in. Thoughts and prayers are with you buddy!

This has always been the most difficult decision for a pet owner. I have had the privilege to be the at the end for my four dogs. Privilege may be a strange word, but my dogs stood by my side for their entire lives, how could i not be by their side when they needed me most? I miss them every day and still curse the fact that they are given such short lifespans.. but i am glad i had them. They all got me tgrough some really tough times, and i wouldn't have made it through without it them. Cherish the memories that Spade has given you.
